It is very true that there are both regular as well as not so regular tasks that must be carried out in order for your grass to stay in pristine condition. Here at Artificial Grass Warrington we give you some tips to help you clean and maintain your artificial grass all year long.

1. Regular maintenance for artificial lawns

In order to prevent debris like soil, sticks, and leaves from building up on top of your artificial grass, we recommend that you use a blower on it once per week during the Autumn and then one per month during the other months of the year. If you don’t own a blower, you can use a plastic rake or stiff broom. We don’t recommend that you use a metal rake since that will pull out or damage the grass fibres in the lawn.

Hosing it down with water a few times per year when needed can help as well. The rest will be done by British weather! If you are going to clean your artificial grass using a pressure washer then we recommend that you gently spray the grass from a distance. Don’t attempt to clean the grass the way you would your patio since that can damage the fibres of the grass and the base of your lawn also.

2. Avoid bird feeders

Make sure that bird feeders are kept at a good distance from artificial grass. If they are too close it can encourage the buildup of droppings and rodents may dig under the feeder at the grass.

3. Removing pet waste and dog urine odours from artificial grass

Use a hose to remove any dog urine or mess. There isn’t any risk of flooding since the artificial grass is porous. If you have a problem with your grass smelling like dog urine then we highly recommend that you use our highly unique product ‘Dog Wee Sand.” We spent many years testing and trying out many different products before coming up with this fairly simple solution. It really works, so give it a go.

4. Raise up the fibres in your artificial grass

If there are people walking over your lawn on a regular basis, the fibres of grass might become flat. In those situations, we recommend that you add sand infill to the artificial grise in order to raise its fibres. If your lawn is large, then you can rent a power brush from a Hire shop to get this job done. If you are on a budget or have a smaller lawn, a plastic leaf rake can work just fine for this task.

5. Tips for preventing weeds

If a membrane was placed under the surface of your artificial grass, then weeds shouldn’t come through it. However, seeds are always in the air and they may land and germinate in the grass or start growing around the sides (that is why we also make it very clear that it is 90% effective when it comes to preventing weeds). If your grass has a few weeds, you can a weed killer that is okay to use on synthetic grass. Roundup is the weed killer spray that we frequently use. Be sure to spray in a day that is calm and dry so rain doesn’t wash the spray away or blow any of it onto the plants around your lawn.

6. How can I get my artificial lawn smelling like ‘real grass?’

To get your artificial grass smelling like the real thing, add artificial grass cleaner to your lawn and brush it in. Ofthe a chemical compound called cis-3-Hexenal is contained in these grass cleaners. The compound is a colourless liquid that has a strong odor of freshly cut grass. Just mix it in with other ingredients and you will have that smell of freshly cut grass. However, we do not recommend that these products be used to try to cove up smells like dog wee since we have discovered it just makes your grass smell like dog wee. It is best to use it like you would a perfume. You would not apply aftershave or perfume without first washing!

7. How to remove ice and snow from an artificial grass lawn

we recommend that you take certain steps to care for your artificial grass during the winter when there is snow or very cold weather. To remove snow from the lawn, I recommend that you use a plastic snow shovel for getting rid of most of the snow and then getting rid of the rest with a broom. Using salt is not recommended since that can leave grit on your grass and might cause discolouration or could potentially cause drainage problems with grit building up and not allowing the water to escape.
